Character
Character Name: Isabel Guerra
Age: 12
Suitability: Paranatural is a story about (among other things) coming to terms with loss and death specifically. It's also about a bunch of middle school kids. The two aren't mutually exclusive. And also Isabel specifically is a super tough fighter despite her youth who is specifically trained for fighting ghosts. It'll be a little weird, but not SO weird that I don't feel like I can handle it.
Canon: Paranatural
Canon Point: End of Chapter 6
History: Isabel's wiki page
Personality: Isabel comes off as a fairly simple person. A big dumb hero who likes getting into fights and not much else. There's more to her than that, though. Isabel comes off as simple because she likes simple, but unfortunately life isn't. Sometimes she has to face problems you can't punch in the face, and she's a kid so she's still trying to figure out how to do that. Her normal strategy is to just pretend that everything is fine and she doesn't actually have any problems. It doesn't always work.
Zack Morrison, the writer of Paranatural, was not subtle with their naming conventions. Isabel's last name is Guerra, which is Spanish for War. The entire family is a family of fighters. Her granddad teaches the art of spectral fist (a martial art designed for fighting ghosts and spirits), her father is largely a mystery but the ONE scene we saw im in had him training someone to use a sword, and Isabel, well...When Isabel found out Max (the actual main character of Paranatural) was being menaced by a spirit, she flipped a coin to see whether she or her friend would go in and save him, and Isabel had to wait outside because she LOST the coin toss. She likes beating things up is what I'm getting at. She has many many violent bones in her body.
Which would normally be a recipe for a bully and an asshole, when you put someone like that in modern society, but Isabel has something else going for her: naturally heroic instincts. It sounds super corny, but when people are in danger Isabel reacts without really thinking about it and throws herself into danger to help them. I wouldn't necessarily call it a martyr complex, since she doesn't really sacrifice herself. She just intervenes as best as she is able, and worried about the consequences later.
"Thinking about the consequences later" is something of a theme with Isabel, in fact. She is very easy to trick, because she just does the first thing that occurs to her. But even more than that, Isabel shies away from self-reflection. A major source of conflict between Isabel and Isaac is that Isaac made a mistake and hurt someone in their past, and Isabel doesn't want to talk about it, she just wants to pretend everything is okay again. She brushes him off every time he brings it up which only goes on to make him feel isolated. It takes a lot of pressure to get her to talk about things that are bugging her instead of just going "Rar big tough girl I can handle anything let's punch something!"
Sin: Wrath - Simple, but Isabel is just a fighthappy kid who likes solving problems with violence. She doesn't lash out at people who don't deserve it, but MAN when something DOES deserve it she goes all out and she ENJOYS it.
Sloth - Isabel doesn't like dealing with problems that she can't punch, so she just doesn't. Interpersonal drama, self-doubt, if she can't throw down with it, Isabel just pretends that it's not a problem and that everything is okay. Why deal with your problems when you can just ignore them?
Envy - Isabel is frustrated by her grandfather having higher standards for her than he does for everyone else, and hates that she always is expected to be PERFECT while the people around her often are not.
Executor Title: Spectral, Kid, Jock
Memoria: 1. Doberman - A very young Isabel accidentally pisses off a big dog. She tried to fight it just like she tried to fight everything, but her spectral powers had absolutely no effect on a flesh and blood foe, and so she got bit really bad. Ever since then, she's had a fear of dogs
2. Eightfold - To help Isabel deal with her fear of dogs, Isabel's grandfather gave her a spirit tool. The spirit Eightfold gave Isabel the power to control paper, and also became one of Isabel's close friends
3. The Paranatural Activity Club - As Isabel started middle school, her granddad directed her towards the Paranatural Activity Club, a school club run by one Richard Spender (The US history teacher), and dedicated to giving young students with spectral powers some first hand experience with low level threats, like poltergeists. The other students in it were Edward Burger, Isaac O'Connor, and Dimitri Danger.
4. Don't tell Isaac - Isaac had a spirit possessing him. It gave him some cool powers, but it also meant, according to Mr. Spender, that there are some thing it was absolutely forbidden to talk to him about. They couldn't mention the Paranatural Activity Consortium, the organization he apparently worked for. Isabel didn't know WHY this was important, but she trusted Mr. Spender.
5. Isaac's mistake - Isabel doesn't remember exactly what the actual instigating event was (since canon has not yet revealed what it is), but she remembered that Dimitri got hurt and left the club because of it, and that Isaac blamed himself for it, and decided that everyone else blamed him for it too. He started getting more withdrawn and short tempered.
6. The New Kid - Normally a new student wouldn't honestly be THAT exciting but this one, Maxwell Puckett, wasn't normal. He was showing all the signs of being a newly awakened spectral. Isabel realized what was up while hunting down a poltergeist, and gave the kid an excited hug on the spot before locking him in a supply closet so he wouldn't get hurt.
7. Don't rap at me - Isabel always got in fights with her grandfather. Tonight, it was because her spec-shot was a few centimetres off target. Grandpa always demanded perfection from his students, but he held her to a SPECIALLY high standard.
8. Ghost Train - Going to meet a visitor from Spender's Paranatural Activity Consortium means taking the Ghost Train, a powerful spirit that is one of the few things that can bypass the barrier around Mayview. Oh right, also there's a barrier around Mayview. Of COURSE there is. There has been for as long as Isabel can remember!
9. Goodbye Eightfold - On Isabel's left, Max was about to get mauled by a dark spirit. On her right, the book that housed the spirit Eightfold was falling out the door of a moving train. She had ONE MOMENT to decided what to do...and Eightfold took the decision out of her hands. She trapped them both in a moment of super time and shared a long and tearful goodbye, distracting her until, in the real world, enough time had passed that Eightfold's book was out of reach. Isabel only had one choice now. Give up on her spirit friend, and save her human friend.
10. Ed's Betrayal - Isabel had lost something important. A book, holding the spirit Eightfold. Her grandfather was going to be FURIOUS. She asked for Spender's help, but he left, distracted by something. Ed lasted a bit longer, but when she was face to face with her grandfather, Ed abandoned her, slinking away to his room and leaving Isabel to face his wrath alone. It stung almost as much as the chewing out she got for losing the book.
11. Flipflop - Isabel needed a spirit partner, since she had lost Eightfold. She got Flipflop, a weak spirit, who explained that her grandfather was hoping to wean her off relying on spirits altogether. Annoyed, Isabel decided to become friends with Flipflop out of spite. Among other reasons
12. HITBALL - The most intense middle school PE class in history. During a spirited game ofDodgeball Hitball, it quickly became obvious that one of the students, Jeff Flavors, was possessed by some kind of spirit that gave him superhuman strength and also wanted to HURT someone. Suddenly the stakes were high, as Isabel and her classmates tried to figure out how to end the game without letting Jeff(?) hurt anyone.
13. Imposter - After a day of searching, Isabel and her friends finally confronted the bodyjacking spirit that had been hiding from them. In the body of Mr. Spender, the spirit shouted out some stupid speech about how evil he was, only to get beaten up by a bunch of tweens.
14. Prophecy - On the way home from school, Isabel encountered a pair of angry sphinxes. Though the sphinxes were kind of puny in terms of raw strength, and got handily beaten up, but before they left, one of them left a prophecy that by the end of summer, Mayview would be destroyed!

CHARACTER NAME: Isabel Guerra
CANON: Paranatural
HISTORY: The comic hasn't gone into Isabel's backstory in TOO much detail yet but here is what we know:
- Isabel's family are mostly spectrals (a kind of psychic that specializes in interacting with ghosts and spirits).
- Her parents are MIA and have not been mentioned
- Isabel lives in the town of Mayview with her grandfather, who teaches Spectral Fist, a fighting style that focuses on utilizing spectral powers to fight spirits and such
- Isabel has had these powers since a VERY young age. When she was tiny, she tried to fight a big dog. Unfortunately, spectral powers have no effect on the living so she got badly bit and gained a phobia of dogs.
- To help her cope, her grandfather gave her a book possessed by the spirit Eightfold, which let her effect the material world with her powers by way of controlling paper. The two of them became good friends.
- Years later, Isabel joined the Paranatural Activity Club at Mayview Middle School, and started getting more hands on experience battling spirits under the guidance of Richard Spender, a teacher at the school and a ridiculous nerd.
- SOMETHING happened, but we don't know what exactly. It was very dramatic and resulted in Isaac, one of Isabel's friends who was also in the club, somehow hurting Dimitri, another club member. As a result, Dimitri left the club.
- Things go on awkwardly in this vein as Isabel becomes the strongest student in the club and ace spirit battler while Isaac decides everyone hates him and got more and more grumpy and withdrawn.
- Maxwell Puckett, a new transfer student and the actual main character of the story, is discovered to be a spectral and sostrongarmed convinced to join the club.
- Various supernatural adventures occur. Or perhaps they were paranormal. If only there were some way to fuse those two words...
STRENGTHS: Confident - Isabel rarely chokes up or gives in to fear for long. She has a high opinion of her own abilities and is difficult to intimidate, staying collected, if not calm, and thinking quickly even when in over her head. Even when facing a pair of demon dog spirits, a type of creature that she's notably afraid of, Isabel was able to master her fear enough to fight them and win.
Leaderly - Isabel's confidence acts as a magnet to the people around her. She instinctively takes charge in any situation where the people around her are hesitating, and they generally listen to her. She's comfortable with the idea of other people looking to her for answers and doesn't get embarrassed by attention very easily.
Selfless - Isabel instinctively will put herself at risk to help others. She's got a very heroic mindset of "protect the weak". It sometimes gets her into trouble, but the fact that she does it without thinking also wins her lots of loyal friends who might have doubted someone the sincerity of more calculating. Isabel's friends know she has their backs no matter what. When her desire to help others led to her losing Eightfold forever, Eightfold spent their last moments together to tell her (among other things) that her innate need to help and protect others was the thing she admired most in her.
FLAWS: Internalizes stress - When something is stressing Isabel out, or when someone confronts her about something that's bothering her, her first reaction is to pretend like everything is okay and change the subject as quick as possible. She doens't like talking about her own problems if she doesn't have to. If she can pretend everything is okay for long enough, eventually maybe it will be.
Short sighted - Isabel has a bad habit of "Out of sight out of mind". She tends to forget the big picture in favor of dealing with the problem directly in front of her. She rushes in and asks questions later. She rarely thinks more than a step or two ahead. Whether that means attacking an enemy without worrying about the consequences, or putting herself in a bad situation to save a friend, she'll do it without thinking. And then eat shit for it later.
Trusting - Isabel generally assumes the best about her friends and has a hard time accepting that they don't have her best interested at heart unless they give her a really strong reason to do so. When told to keep secrets from one of her friends by Mr. Spender, she did so without question even though it was clearly hurting him to be so obviously excluded. When she DOES realize that someone has hoodwinked her she can get very very angry.
CANON ABILITIES: Isabel is a Spectral, which means she can do several things that normal humans can't.
- Isabel can see ghosts and spirits that are invisible to normal humans.
- All of Isabel's powers manifest as a bright red energy. This energy sometimes leaks from her in a way that looks like she's emitting smoke when she's particularly stressed or excited or generally emotional. It can also only be seen by people with powers of their own, and can also only EFFECT people with powers of their own. To the mundane, she might as well be playing pretend.
- Her spectral energy can be shaped into various weapons, tools, shields, or other constructs, or it can also be fired like energy bolts. This makes her a highly versatile and formidible opponent to non-corporeal foes.
Isabel also has a spectral tool: The book the spirit Eightfold resides in. Eightfold feeds slowly on Isabel's spectral energy and in exchange gives her a few MORE abilities on top of her spectral powers.
- Isabel can enter a sort of trance like state while she has Eightfold's book, in which she can talk to Eightfold directly even when she isn't manifested in the material world. While in this state, time slows down, allowing Isabel to have long conversations in a second or two, or to move at superhuman speeds (though using this as an effective battle tactic is very difficult). Eightfold is the one who initiates this power rather than Isabel, usually.
- By focusing her energy, Isabel can summon Eightfold into the material world. This isn't SUPER useful, as Eightfold on her own is actually an incredibly weak spirit.
- The MAIN thing she gets from Eightfold is the ability to control paper. She's been shown to make ridable origami mounts, weapons, chairs, bandages, and more. Eightfold's book seems to be the source for this paper, and seems to be able to generate more paper than could logically fit within it. She feeds Eighfold books, so that's probably where the extra pages come from.
- All of these powers only work while Isabel actually has the book in her possession. If it gets more than a few feet from her they start rapidly getting weaker.
In ADDITION to all of that, she is a capable martial artist for someone of her age. That's not inherently a power, but the Spectral Fist fighting style makes heavy use of her spetral powers, allowing her to do grabs and strikes against some foes that would be physically impossible for a normal fighter. Stuff like this.
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Isabel Guerra
AGE: 14 (slightly aged up from canon so that she won't be drastically younger than most of the game's cast.)
GRADE: 8
AU BACKSTORY: - The Guerra's are a family of candles from Mexico who are known for being particularly strong and intimidating, and for being hunters and adventurers for generations.
- When Isabel's grandfather decided he was too old to continue adventuring, he got a very attractive offer from Daybreak Academy to work there as a teacher and went with it.
- Isabel's parents left their six year old daughter with him one day for what was supposed to be a short hunt in the Middle East somewhere. They never came back, but he had absolute confidence in them and still assumes they were merely delayed. For eight years.
- Isabel grew up with her grandfather and thinks of most of the Daybreak Academy Faculty as kind of like weird aunts and uncles.
- When she was 11 she got attacked by a big dog and tried to fight it off with spectral energy, which absolutely did not work. She gained a phobia of dogs, but also was given a spirit tool to help rebuild her confidence.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: OUsabel lives in a town that ISN'T 100% in on the existence of the supernatural, and so has an inherently secretive streak. AUsabel lives in Soleil, which is entirely in on the secret, so she's never really felt the need to hide anything and is generally a bit more open as a person.
RACE: Human (Candle)
SECRET SOCIETY: None
POWERS: Same as canon, except that Isabel is a candle and so her powers have a slightly different "fuel source", if you take my meaning.
- Isabel can see ghosts and spirits that are invisible to normal humans.
- All of Isabel's powers manifest as a bright red energy. This energy sometimes leaks from her in a way that looks like she's leaking smoke when she's particularly stressed or excited or generally emotional. It can also only be seen by people with powers of their own, and can also only EFFECT people with powers of their own. To the mundane, she might as well be playing pretend.

- All of these powers only work while Isabel actually has the book in her possession. If it gets more than a few feet from her they start rapidly getting weaker.
As a Candle, Isabel's spectral constructs will work just as well on all blighted foes, whether corporeal or not.
HOUSING: Isabel lives with her Grandfather in a house in Soleil. She bikes to school.
RP SAMPLE
INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
Well Gran- er, Professor Guerra is a pretty intense guy. It'd probably be good to have some different teaching styles in my life other than "push them until they get it right, then insult them until they get it perfect."
2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
I'm gonna kick the butts of dark spirits all over the world!
5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
Nothin'.
[beat]
I mean I'm already pretty incredible and I'm always getting better. I just need more experience, y'know?
6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
I like the parts where I get to bust heads, because they're fun.
7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
I dunno, there isn't really any one thing that sticks out more than anything else? I guess language arts is kinda boring but school work is school work. You just deal with it.
[Not a lie, but a dodge. "Deal with it" doesn't always mean "do it."]
8. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE YOUR EDUCATION?
I hunt spirits, do extra training to keep Grandpa off my back, collect terrible books for my friend Eightfold...also like, video games and stuff I guess? What does this have to do with going to school?
9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
Ugh free time sounds nice. Grandpa keep dragging me into extra training to forge the ultimate warrior out of me.
11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
That they trust me, and that I can trust them.
12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
I dunno I just...try to be more leaderly? Look it's just a gut feeling sort of thing. You see what you need to do and you just...make sure someone does it. Or do it yourself, if you have to! I dunno how to explain it better than that!
13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
Slightly hesitantly: Of course I can rely on them! You guys can see the future, you'd know if anyone here wasn't trustworthy, right?
15. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?
....Dogs.
[Lie. She is afraid of dogs but she's more afraid of losing everyone she relies on and having to go at the world alone.]

As a Candle, Isabel's spectral constructs will work just as well on all blighted foes, whether corporeal or not.
In ADDITION to all of that, she is a capable martial artist for someone of her age. That's not inherently a power, but the Spectral Fist fighting style makes heavy use of her spetral powers, allowing her to do grabs and strikes against some foes that would be physically impossible for a normal fighter.
